RCC Art Faculty Exhibit ~ May 1 - 26, 2007
An exhibit of artwork created by the art faculty at Rogue Community College. This annual show features painting, sculpture, watercolor and mixed media by Madalin Blue, Andrea Ciaston, Tommi Drake, Pat Enos, Janet Higgins, Billie Miracle, Carl Seyboldt and Tom Wilson.  In the Community Exhibits Room: “War - Reactions & Commentaries” collage by RCC students!

"Where We Live" features the natural wonders of Southern Oregon as depicted by Paula Fong, botanical watercolor art, Randy White, photography and July Weiner, oil painting. Related projects by Gladiola High School students are presented. Lichen dyed weavings by Rachel Winters are also displayed. Come see how the common is transformed to uncommon beauty, while the little known and unseen is revealed for the first time.  The RCC Chorus will perform several jazz sets.

THE HARPER-HOWELL GALLERY

The famous CENTER PARTITION at Harper-Howell will feature a show of smaller Abstract paintings by our own R. Samuel Santi, Nina Bindi and Suzanne Green … the Show opens First Friday night and continues for the month of May. Come to the OPENING and meet the artist, sample the complimentary refreshments, and bask in live jazz by the Tim Wallace Band. In addition, view new works by more than thirty outstanding regional artists. This month we welcome Nicoli van Geldern (Art Jewelry), Patsy Heller (Watercolors) and Emily Tyrrell (Photography) to the Harper-Howell!

The Creative Alternative a fair trade store presents a two-part show; Sean Strunk is one of the artists for May. Sean has been drawing since age seven when he did a near perfect rendition of a chicken from his cartoon book. Now at age 33 Sean is still making images and works in his studio at home, creating art that he hopes will inspire happiness in the viewer. Fruitdale elementary students will have a representative display of their permanent all school art quilt project. The project was funded in part by a matching grant from the 3rivers school foundation and was nurtured by a talented and energetic textile artist Kathy Kelly. Each student had painted and embellished a quilt piece with words of a river or a tree leaf the trees and river represent the commun9ity spirit within and surrounding Fruitdale School

Photographer Dennis Kirkland will be showing his artwork during the May First Friday Art night. Dennis originally started taking photographs as a way to document and record the beauty of the places I visited. In the mid 1990’s photography started becoming more important to him. Now his goal with photography is to enjoy the experience of being in the natural world and try to capture the essence of special places and creatures on film. He also enjoys creating abstract, impressionist, or unusual images by using techniques such as multiple exposure, reflections, and taking pictures of images in water drops.

Local artist Janet E Higgins exhibits her steel and ceramic sculpture at H Street Antiques during the month of May. Janet has exhibited her work in the region since moving to Grants Pass with her family 14 years ago and has been teaching sculpture classes at Rogue Community College since last spring. Her most recent is a sculpture combination of steel clay and features her recently completed! ”Cage Man”, a life-sized steel man housing a group of steel birds. Janet is active as a member of the Board of the Grants Pass Museum of Art and is co-owner of AMBUS, a gallery in Medford.

Stop by Treasured Memories and see the First Place winners from the Josephine County Artists Association Spring Art Show. Artists Eileen Shropshire, Janet Rawlings, Marianne Nielsen, Pearlene Gavlik, Jude Wroblewski and Heike Arnold will have their work on display. In addition to the First Place winners, Eileen Shropshire’s painting, which won Best of Show, and Donna Walsh's painting, which won both the Peoples Choice Award and the Jury of Your Peers - Award of Excellence, will both be displayed for your enjoyment.

“Alphabet Soup,” the alphabet illustrated in oils, is the highlight of “A Touch of Class: A Few of Our Favorite Subjects,” an art show in May at the historic Schmidt House and Barn, corner of Fifth and J streets. Shirley Bell’s adult painting class, The Brush Strokers, has painted a “quilt” featuring an illustrated alphabet lesson for beginning readers. Thirty painters from Grants Pass and Rogue contributed to the project.
“Michael Oaks will demonstrate “Artistry in Mortar and Brick,” an e-book of Grants Pass’ historic district as it was in the years between 1883 and 1912, in the Josephine County Historical Society’s Research Library, corner of Fifth and K streets. A limited number of e-books will be available for purchase. Those interested in obtaining a copy of the CD can also place orders. A reception for the artists is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. A brief tour of the landmark Schmidt House and history lesson is given every First Friday. The Schmidt House is located at 508 S.W. Fifth Street, corner of Fifth and J streets.

4th Street Beauty Company presents a night with Christine Cutty as she displays “Art Therapy” watercolor with black overlays creating a different picture for each person as objects appear from within the dimensions.
