The Birth of Venus(2007)

An original take on an old Botticelli theme.  Sandro's Venus looked a little uncomfortable to me, standing up in her shell while afloat on the choppy seas, so I decided to have mine seated.  I also made mine more Mediterranean looking (Whatever was Botticelli thinking?  His Venus looks more Scandanavian!)

The Garden in a Forest (2005)

Rendered in oil, rather than the customary acrylic, this is the artist's first Riverbanks Road garden on, as seen through his mind's eye when the plants were tiny seedlings.  Yes, it turned out very much like this, except the tomatoes never ripened before the frosts hit, and the cayenne peppers never materialized at all.

The End of the World (2003)

A Black Hole (represented in the form of a hematite bead) sucks spiraling matter from the Sun while simultaneously tearing off huge chunks from the Earth, while ethereal lips whisper their final good-bye.

Smoke Tree (2002)

The Smoke Tree in front of the Ivy House as seen from the steps of the permanently closed Blue Pine Brew Pub.  The mind's eye has eliminated ALL the buildings in the vicinity

The Blues Police (1997)

This was painted for a 1997 show at Listen Here, a tribute to a previous exhibit in which Captain Belchfire not only made his public debut, but also helped the local music shop win top honors the nationwide Alligator Records competition for creative music shop promotions of their products (Blues LPs for the most part.)

Bilbo and the Trolls (1987)

Loosely adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT, the Trolls have captured all the dwarves and bagged them up to eat at their leisure.  According to Tolkien, Bilbo was hiding in the bushes at this time, while Gandalf (in the background at left) threw his voice to make the trolls think the other trolls were arguing with them.  Soon they were all arguing with one another about who's arguing with who.  The Moon went down, the Sun came up, and the trolls, caught out in the open, immediately turned to stone, and the quest for the Lonely Mountain continued...

The only picture the artist has painted twice;  the original was destroyed in a fire in 1984.

Starfighter Mandala (1979)

This was first exhibited at the 1979 Westercon (West Coast Science Fiction Convention,) held that year at the Drake Hotel in San Francisco.

Of 24 paintings, all but two complete (and for which a show was being tentatively scheduled), this is the only one to survive an apartment fire, though some heat blistering and smoke damage added some needed touches.  The show was postponed 12 years while the artist painted more (although only Bilbo and the Trolls was ever specifically repainted.)

Lord of the Nazgul (1978)

Signed in capital olde English and with the elf rune for "G", this piece is dated 1978 and may be the oldest extant work of the artist.  Reflecting his tastes in fantasy literature, this is the leader of the Ringwraiths from J.R.R. Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS, shown flting his winged steed over Mordor, with Mount Doom in the background spewing fire.

Okay, this one survived the fire of '84 too, but it wasn't on the wall like the others. I had it stashed in a closet where it wouldn't scare the cat.
